Bodhgaya also known as Buddha Land in India.
Gaya, Gateway to Heaven
You have to see it to believe it as the Hindus throng the place from all
corners of India as well as the world to pay homage to their forefathers. It
is believed that the souls of their forefathers rest in peace after Hindus
perform this ritual which is also known as Pindadan. You can
avail the services of the priests for the purpose as well. Gaya is home to
some of the most sacred Hindu shrines whereas the nearby Bodhgaya is famous
for some of the most pious Buddhist shrines.
Seek the Truth at
Bodhgaya
The place became prominent because in ancient times the Prince of
Kapilvastu came here to seek salvation, to seek enlightenment. People
followed in his footsteps and they still go on. Each of the places where
pilgrims go are important in their own right. The peepal tree under which
Lord Buddha meditated near the banks of Niranjana river for 49 days is now
known as the Bodhi tree. The place is known as Bodhgaya whereas the river is
now known as Phalgu. It is said that Emperor Ashoka also came to the place
as a pilgrim several times. The number of tourists visiting the city is
maximum when the anniversary of Lord Buddha is being celebrated in the month
of May every year.
Bodhgaya Destinations
Mahabodhi
Temple - The vast image of Lord Buddha in the Mahabodhi Temple leaves a
lasting impression on the followers of Buddhism as well other tourists. The
temple itself is in a pyramidal shape with a prayer hall on the first floor.
The structure of the temple also attracts attention especially the entrance
which is built in the South Indian style. It is believed that the first
construction of the temple was by Emperor Ashoka and the renovation work was
undertaken several times afterwards.
Tibetan Monastery - The Tibetan monastery looks really
attractive with the profusion of the ornamentation here but that doesn't
distract you from the the image of the presiding deity of the monastery,
Lord Buddha. The structure is two storeyed and is situated to the west of
the Mahabodhi Temple.
Surya Temple, Deo - The annual Chhath Puja is celebrated
here with a lot of fervour in November. The Surya Temple is located only 20
km away from Gaya.
